How to open an account

Learn what you need to know when opening a self-directed or Questwealth Portfolios account.

Whether you’re an active trader or just starting out, you can take control of your portfolio with Questrade Self-Directed Investing. Follow these easy steps to get started.

From Questrade.com, navigate to the green “open an account” button on the top right-hand corner. From here, you can make an account selection. Choose between Margin, Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), Retirement Savings Plan (RSP), Forex & CFDs and more.

Once you make a selection, click the green “open now” button on the left-hand side. It will also prompt you to enter an offer code here, which you can enter if you have one.

You’ll be directed to the “next steps” page. From here, click "continue" on the lower right-hand side of your screen to create your user ID.

We’ll save your information as you go, so you can always come back and finish later.

The next screen will ask you to tell us a little bit about yourself. Here, you can fill in your first and last name, email address, and phone number. Click on “continue” and this will bring you to the next screen.

Here, you create your user ID and password. You’ll use the same ID and password every time you log into Questrade. Once you’ve created your ID and password, click the "continue" button.

On the next screen, you can choose your two security questions, such as “what is your favourite movie?” or “what is your favourite song?” Select two of the questions provided and answers that you’ll remember.

You’ll be brought back to your profile screen and this is where you’ll start to build your profile. You’ll see four boxes: Personal, Employment, Financial, and Citizenship.

When filling this section out, keep in mind these profile questions help us identify you to keep your account and finances secure. To make the process easier, we only ask for the information we absolutely need.

Click on the “Personal” box to complete this section. Your first name, last name, phone number and email will pre-populate into this section. Scroll down to enter your marital status and address and click “done.”

You’ll be brought back to your profile screen. Click the “Employment” box and enter your employment type. Answer the subsequent questions based on your current situation and select “done.”

Next, click the “Citizenship” box. Here, enter your country of citizenship. Please let us know if you are a tax resident of a jurisdiction other than Canada and the U.S. Certify that all of your tax residence is complete and select “done.”

Select your self-directed account and click “set up account.”

Here, you’ll be asked a few more questions about your account. In the first section, enter your account details. Select if you’d like to allow options trading, then enter the purpose of your account and your initial deposit. Select “done.”

Next, please give your consent to communication. In order to keep you informed about your account balances and activities, Questrade may need to communicate with you from time to time. You can choose to receive shareholder communications and stay up-to-date on the securities you own. These may be sent through Questrade, or directly from the market or issuers of securities. Please confirm how you would like to be communicated with and continue.

Complete the “Persons with financial interest” section. Confirm and continue.

Next is the “Agreements” section. Please read the agreements carefully and click “done.”

The second section of setting up your account is to submit and sign your documents. Please E-sign the document package or you can print a physical copy, sign it and mail it to Questrade. Then, upload a government-issued photo-ID if required. Please note these documents may take up to 10 business days to process due to high volumes.

You’re all set

Once you’ve funded your account, you’re all set! Welcome to your new self-directed account. Log in to keep track of your account opening status and documents.

Getting started with Questwealth Portfolios™ is easy. Follow these steps to open your portfolio.

From Questrade.com, navigate to the green “Open an account” button in the top right corner of the page. This will take you to the Account Selection page where you can choose the product and account types that are right for you.

Scroll past the self-directed options to where it says “Questwealth - get an intelligent portfolio designed by experts” and click “add.” On the right side of your screen, you’ll see a confirmation that says, “You’re opening 1 account(s).” If you have an offer code, you can enter it here. You can select the account type for your Questwealth portfolio at the end of the Portfolio Questionnaire because we would like to understand your risk tolerance and financial goals first. Click the green “open now” button and a new page will open in your browser. 

Select the “start questionnaire” button to get started. You’ll be asked a series of questions so we can match you with a portfolio. If you need to exit, no problem. Click the “save and continue” button and you can come back at any time.

In the questionnaire, you’ll answer 10 questions about your financial goals and risk tolerance. Knowing your financial circumstance and goals, as well as your ability and willingness to take risks, helps us determine the appropriate portfolio for you. We’re here to help you reach your objective. Markets can face sudden fluctuations and investments can experience sharp declines due to unforeseen global events. Your comfort with portfolio growth or decline will help us provide you with the portfolio that is best suited to you.

If you have any answers that contradict each other, you’ll see yellow boxes that will require your attention. Please see this article about conflicts for help.

Your recommended portfolio will appear on the screen. Here, you can select the option to make your portfolio Socially Responsible. If you’re happy with your portfolio, select “continue.”

From here, you’ll be asked to choose the account type for your portfolio. Choose from a Cash Account, Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), or Registered Savings Plan (RSP). Choose an account type and continue.

Now you can start to build your profile. You’ll see four boxes: Personal, Employment, Financial, and Citizenship.

Next, please give your consent to communication. Select your preferred language for security holder materials (English or French) and click “continue.”

Complete the “Persons with financial interest” section. Confirm and continue.

Next is the “Agreements” section. Please read the agreements carefully and click “done.”

The second section of setting up your account is to submit and sign your documents. Please E-sign the document package and the Investment Management Agreement, then upload a government-issued photo-ID. Please note these documents may take up to 10 business days to process due to high volumes.

The third and final step is to fund your account. Choose how you’d like to fund your account and follow the outlined steps to complete the process.

Once you’ve funded your account, you’re all set! Welcome to your new Questwealth portfolio. Log in to keep track of your account opening status and documents.

    • View the value of all your accounts combined. The numbers represent the overall Canadian dollar value as of the previous trading day, even if you hold US dollar investments.
    • All in CAD: U.S. dollar amounts are totaled in Canadian dollars.
    • Unrealized gains (losses): Total profit (or loss) from open positions that haven’t yet been closed. This is displayed separately in CAD and USD
    • Total Market value: The current value of your investments using the best-available market price.
    • Total equity: The total value of your investments and cash.

    • View the list of all your Questrade and Questwealth accounts and their 8-digit account numbers. You can click on each entry to be taken to the Investment Summary page.
    • Cash: The amount of cash in the account, valued all in CAD.
    • Market Value: The value of the positions in the account, all in CAD.
    • Total Equity: Cash + Market Value, all in CAD.
  4. List of Account Transfers
    • If you have an incoming account transfer, it will appear here. You can review ongoing broker to broker account transfer requests, including any updates that need your attention.
MyQuestrade reports

View and download automatically generated reports for your accounts. All reports include information for the last 7 years.

  1. Investment summary
    • Displays the end of day values of your accounts (balances, book value, % return, etc) from any day within the last 7 years.
  2. Investment return
    • Displays interactive graphs showing the returns of your accounts.
  3. Account activity
    • View all account activity (trades, deposits, withdrawals, dividends, and more) for your accounts. Filter by date range and activity type.
  4. Statements
    • Account statements for your self-directed and Questwealth accounts, available monthly or quarterly.
  5. Trade confirmations
    • The trade confirmations for all trades made in your self-directed accounts. Filter by symbol and/or date.
  6. Tax slips
    • Download relevant tax slips generated for your accounts.
MyQuestrade account management

Make changes to your individual accounts: adjust account settings, add or change a market data subscription, download and upload forms, manage authorized traders and beneficiaries.

  1. Account Management
    • View and make changes to individual accounts, including adding or removing an authorized trader, billing account, option level, margin power, currency settlement.
  2. Market Data
    • Learn more about additional market data packages available and choose to add or remove a monthly subscription.
  3. Find Forms
    • Download the relevant forms to make changes to individual trading accounts, or to update information about your Questrade account.
  4. Upload Documents
    • The area where you can upload digital copies of the documents in Find Forms securely, as well as other documents such as void cheques and photo IDs.
  5. Refer a Friend
    • Access your unique referral code to invite others to use Questrade.
  6. Manage Participants
    • Add or change information about authorized traders and beneficiaries.
MyQuestrade funding

Learn about all the ways you can fund your account, or initiate a transfer-in from another broker.

  1. Instant deposit
    • Instantly fund your account using your Canadian Visa and Interac Debit card for up to $3,500 per day (or your bank’s daily transaction limit).
  2. Online banking
    • The web-based trading platform to place trades, and see account balances in real time.
  3. Pre-authorized deposit
    • Set up a one-time or recurring pre-authorized deposit. You can also use this option to fund your account with US Dollars.
  4. Transfer account to Questrade
    • Transfer an account from another financial institution to Questrade, as long as the account types match (TFSA to TFSA, RRSP to RRSP, etc). If your current institution charges a transfer out fee, you can receive a rebate of up to $150 to cover it.
  5. Other funding methods
    • Information about how to fund by wire transfer, cheque, stock certificate, bank draft, and money order.
MyQuestrade requests

Submit requests to make internal changes to your accounts, and to withdraw funds.

  1. Exchange funds
    • Convert the cash in your account between Canadian dollars (CAD) and U.S. dollars (USD).
  2. Transfer funds
    • Transfer cash between any two of your Questrade accounts.
  3. Transfer investments
    • Transfer securities between any two of your Questrade accounts.
  4. Withdraw funds
    • Withdraw cash to your bank account.
  5. Corporate actions
    • Submit a request to take action for a company’s voting events.
  6. Exercise an option
    • Exercise long calls or puts, or choose to have them expire worthless.

Looking to upload some documents for your account? 

We may require you to upload documents when opening an account, or for certain account related requests. We’re happy to help with the process.

Please follow these easy steps to upload:

  1. Log-in to your account
  2. Navigate to "Accounts" from the top left menu.
    • (If you're already on the accounts page after logging in, you can skip this step.)

  3. Hover over the “Account Management” menu button at the top of the page, then select “Upload Documents”.

  4. Select the account you’d like to upload documents for.

  5.  Enter a name for your document on the left, and choose the document type from the drop down menu on the right.

  6. Click “Browse”, then select the file you’d like to upload from your computer.
    • Once you have selected the file, please click “Open” from the pop-up.

  7. Click the green “Upload” button to finalize your document upload.
    • Please note: The maximum file size is 4mb. If your document is larger than this, we suggest uploading either page by page, or using an online service to shrink the PDF or JPEG file.

Once your document has been uploaded, you’ll see this popup appear, simply click “Ok” to move on, or upload other documents.

  1. Log-in to your account from the Questrade website, not the mobile app.
  2. Tap on the Menu icon in the top left corner

  3. From the navigation menu, tap “Account management” then “Upload documents.”

  4. First, select the account that you’re uploading documents to.

  5. Enter a name for your document on the left, then choose the document type from the menu options on the right.

  6. Tap the “Browse” button, and 3 options will appear.
    • You can select a photo from your gallery, take a new photo, or browse the files saved on your mobile device.

  7. Once you’ve confirmed the file you’re uploading, please tap the green “Upload” button to finish uploading your document.
